Abstract
Few studies have investigated an association between vitamin D and calcium nutritional status and dental caries in Korean adolescents, even though they are particularly vulnerable to vitamin D and calcium insufficiency. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and risk of dental caries in Korean adolescents according to calcium intake using the 2010¡2014 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. We analyzed data pertaining to 2,655 Korean adolescents aged 10 to 18 years. Calcium intake was estimated by a single 24-hour dietary recall. The study subjects were classified into two groups according to their calcium intake (¡ÂEAR and >EAR). The association between vitamin D and experience of dental caries according to calcium intake was evaluated by multiple logistic regression analyses after adjusting for age, household income level, recipient of basic livelihood, toothbrushing, and having a dental checkup within the past year. Comparison of the serum 25(OH)D sufficiency (25(OH)D ¡Ã30.0 ng/mL), the OR of serum 25(OH)D insufficiency (20 ng/mL¡Â 25(OH)D £¼30 ng/mL) was 3.370 (95% CI=1.066¡10.655) for experience of dental caries in boys having calcium intake below the estimated average requirements. The serum 25(OH)D levels according to calcium intake were related to risk of dental caries in Korean adolescent boys.
